Example Scenarios

Yes. When you buy a used vehicle in a private sale (not from a dealership) in Ontario, you must pay Retail Sales Tax (RST) at 13%, not HST or GST.

This tax is paid at the time of registration at ServiceOntario.

How the tax is calculated

RST (13%) is calculated on the greater of:

  1. The purchase price
  2. The Wholesale Value of the vehicle (from the Ontario Used Vehicle Information Package)
  3. An appraisal amount (if required)

Example Calculation

You buy a used car from a private seller for $7,000 in Ontario.

  • RST = $7,000 × 0.13 = $910
  • Total cost = $7,000 + $910 = $7,910

If the Wholesale Value is $7,800, RST is calculated on $7,800, not on the purchase price.

Important notes

  • Dealership purchases are different — you pay 13% HST, not RST.
  • Motorcycles, vans, SUVs, and trucks follow the same rule.
  • For very old or severely damaged vehicles, an appraisal may be required.
